The AI Visibility Breakdown
The metrics, gaps and patterns that determine whether your firm gets recommended by AI, or stays invisible.
How to Improve AI Visibility: The Content Originality Filter UK Businesses Miss
TL;DR
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run an originality check before they weigh a single authority signal: does the page add information not already in the model's knowledge of the topic? Content built on unique data is cited in 78% of answers against 12% for generic how-to content, so original research earns AI citation rates of 38% to 65% while standard commentary earns 6% to 15%. The fix is counter-intuitive: publish less with more original substance. One page holding a new, checkable number beats a ten-page calendar of generic guidance.
Most businesses trying to improve AI visibility see the fix as more content: more explainer pages, more "how to" guides answering the questions everyone else answers. This is where the thinking breaks down.
Before ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude weigh a single authority signal, they check whether a page adds something not already sitting in the model's knowledge of a topic. AI cites trend and analysis content built on unique data in 78% of answers, against 12% for generic how-to content (Search Engine Land, 2026). That gap is exclusion at the point of source selection, before the model weighs authority or reputation. UK SME and mid-market businesses put budget behind SEO; 94% run SEO programmes while 62% remain technically invisible to generative AI (Fuel Online, 2026).
Businesses often open an assessment the same way: "We rank on Google but nothing shows up in ChatGPT." This is not theory. It shows up every time we review a library that reads well but says nothing the model has not indexed already.
How AI Reads Content Before It Reads Your Business
A human scans a page for tone and relevance. Retrieval systems work another way: they compare incoming content against what they already hold and score how much new information it adds (Search Engine Land, 2026). The model identifies the topic and its consensus, then scores the passage for overlap, then scores it for distinct information: a statistic or finding not already on record. Content that repeats consensus without adding anything new stays invisible, whatever the writing quality.
The Originality Filter: What It Checks
Content originality means a passage holds verifiable, specific information not available elsewhere. AI checks this before topical depth, backlinks, or domain age. Original research and proprietary data earn AI citation rates of 38% to 65% (ZipTie.dev, 2026). Standard blog commentary earns 6% to 15%, and product pages earn 3% to 8% (ZipTie.dev, 2026). Owned content otherwise ranks lowest for AI citation (AuthorityTech.io, 2026). Google's own generative AI guidance confirms this: valuable, unique, non-commodity content sits above other ranking factors (Google Search Central, 2026).
Why Am I Not Appearing in ChatGPT Despite Regular Content?
Four failures repeat across businesses we assess: the templated explainer shaped like a hundred competitor pages, commentary without data, the recycled statistic with no new angle, and publication without any proprietary source. Semrush's 2026 Index, drawn from 126 million prompts, confirms most of this content sits outside the AI citation pool (Semrush, 2026).
What Content That Gets Cited Has in Common
When we analyse brands that keep appearing in AI answers, the pattern holds: content carries a number nobody else has published, or a result tested against real data rather than asserted. Profound's analysis of nearly 900 new pages found a median time to first ChatGPT or Claude citation of 6.81 days, with 90% cited within 37 days (Blyskal, 2026). Reddit remains the most cited source across major AI engines at close to 40% frequency (5WPR, 2026). Even third-party corroboration rewards original discussion over recycled brand copy. What we do not see are shortcuts.
Counter-Intuitive Insight and What to Chase
Publishing less, with more original substance, beats publishing more. A ten-page calendar of generic guidance loses to one page holding a new number. AI does not reward originality by default; it rewards a clean, checkable data point that answers a measurable question (Indig, 2026).
Ask yourself this. Does each core page on your site hold something a competitor could not publish verbatim tomorrow? Run an AI visibility audit against that question before commissioning another explainer page.
