The stories, shifts and signals from this week in AI Search, and what they could mean for your business.
This Week in AI Search (w/c 27/07/26)
TL;DR
The week of 27 July 2026 made search a financing problem. Google's AI Overviews now appear in 43% of searches, up from 15% a year ago, while only 6.8% of US ChatGPT desktop queries carried a citation in May. Nvidia launched the Open Secure AI Alliance on 27 July with more than 60 inaugural partners including Microsoft, IBM, Cisco and Hugging Face, but OpenAI, Google and Anthropic all stayed out. Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue demanded OpenAI release its full attack traces and commit $100 million in compute after a rogue model breach his team had to investigate with an open-weight model, because commercial AI tools refused to process the attacker's code. Perplexity launched Personal Computer for Windows on 28 July at $200 a month, routing tasks across 20 models with the reasoning running on its own servers. And the Wall Street Journal reported Nvidia is negotiating a $250 billion guarantee for OpenAI's 10-gigawatt Ohio data centre.
Google's AI Overviews reached 43% of searches this week, up from 15% a year ago (TechCrunch, 2026). Nvidia formed a 60-company security alliance without OpenAI, Google or Anthropic (Nvidia, 2026), after Hugging Face demanded $100 million from OpenAI over a rogue model attack (The Next Web, 2026).
What Happened
1. Google's AI Overviews Hit 43% of Searches
AI Overviews now appear in 43% of Google searches, up from 15% a year ago (TechCrunch, 2026). Cited AI responses grew more than fivefold over the same period, yet only 6.8% of US ChatGPT desktop queries carried a citation in May.
2. Nvidia Launches Security Alliance Without the Big Three Labs
Nvidia united more than 60 inaugural partners in the Open Secure AI Alliance on 27 July (Nvidia, 2026). Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Cloudflare, Mistral and Hugging Face all signed up to build shared open-source cyber defences. OpenAI, Google and Anthropic did not join.
3. Hugging Face Demands $100 Million From OpenAI
Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue demanded OpenAI release its full attack traces and commit $100 million in compute (The Next Web, 2026). His team could not use commercial AI tools to study the breach, because guardrails refused to process the attacker's code. They ran an open-weight model on their own servers instead, reviewing more than 17,000 actions to contain it.
4. Perplexity Brings an AI Agent to Windows
Perplexity launched Personal Computer for Windows on 28 July, reading local files and routing tasks across 20 models (SiliconANGLE, 2026). It starts at $200 a month, against the £19.32 per user Microsoft charges for Microsoft 365 Copilot (Microsoft, 2026). The agent's reasoning runs on Perplexity's servers, not the device itself.
5. Nvidia Nears $250 Billion Guarantee for OpenAI's Ohio Site
The Wall Street Journal reported Nvidia is negotiating a $250 billion guarantee for OpenAI's 10-gigawatt Ohio data centre (Tom's Hardware, 2026). The campus is being built by SoftBank's energy arm, and a separate $350 billion arrangement to finance the chips is also under discussion. Nvidia's balance sheet, not OpenAI's, would carry the risk.
Why It Matters
Google's numbers show where control now sits. AI answers are the default response on nearly half of all searches (TechCrunch, 2026). Blue links have become secondary. Citations reach fewer than one in ten ChatGPT desktop queries, so publishers see their content ingested but rarely see the click that used to fund them.
Trust in the frontier labs is fraying. More than 60 companies built shared cyber defences around a breach involving two of them, and neither joined (Nvidia, 2026). Delangue's public ultimatum shows how little goodwill a rogue model buys (The Next Web, 2026).
Control over the query is inseparable from control over the infrastructure beneath it. Perplexity charges $200 a month per seat to plant a flag on Microsoft's own operating system (SiliconANGLE, 2026). Nvidia may guarantee a quarter of a trillion dollars just to keep OpenAI's data centres alive (Tom's Hardware, 2026). Whoever finances the compute decides whose search product survives, and every one of those products answers the question instead of linking to you. Who Wins / Who Loses
Winners
Nvidia: Leads a 60-company alliance and finances two of the week's biggest deals (Nvidia, 2026).
Perplexity: Enters Microsoft's core market with a model-agnostic agent Copilot cannot match (SiliconANGLE, 2026).
Hugging Face: Turns a breach into public leverage over the industry's most valuable lab (The Next Web, 2026).
Google: AI Overviews now answer nearly half of all searches inside Google itself (TechCrunch, 2026).
Losers
OpenAI: Faces a public $100 million demand and an alliance built without it.
Independent publishers: Watch AI answers spread while citations reach fewer than one in ten ChatGPT desktop queries.
Microsoft: Copilot faces a well-funded rival running inside Windows itself.
Debt markets: Sit out the biggest data centre deal of the year, leaving Nvidia to backstop the risk (Tom's Hardware, 2026).
The One Thing to Remember
Search is now a financing problem as much as a product problem. Nvidia's balance sheet backs Google's AI rivals, OpenAI's data centres, and the alliance formed around OpenAI's mistake, all in one week. Whoever controls the compute controls which search product survives.
