Buyer Behaviour Analysis
How AI is reshaping the way professional services firms get found, evaluated and chosen.
B2B Buyers Spread Across Three AI Platforms in 2026. Most UK Businesses Are Visible on One.
TL;DR
94% of B2B buyers now use AI in purchasing research (Forrester, 2026) and they spread across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, each with its own citation logic. Most UK businesses optimised for one platform, and a brand cited by one carries no assurance of appearing in the others (Gemini 3 alone replaced 42% of cited domains). With 95% of buyers choosing from their day-one shortlist, single-platform visibility is now an acquisition gap, not a coverage choice.
ChatGPT processes around two billion queries a day and remains the most-used AI assistant by session volume (First Page Sage, 2026), but its AI referral share hit its lowest recorded level in May 2026 as Gemini and Perplexity continued gaining users (TechRadar, 2026). 94% of B2B buyers now use AI in purchasing research (Forrester, 2026), and many begin vendor evaluation inside an AI assistant before ever visiting a supplier website (6sense, 2025). Most UK businesses have built AI search visibility strategies around a single platform. Their buyers research on three.
How the AI Research Environment Divided in 2026
ChatGPT’s lead in session volume does not translate into buyer coverage across all AI platforms. Google AI Overviews now appear across a large and growing share of queries, while Google AI Mode and AI Overviews pull from citation pools with limited URL overlap. Perplexity Comet launched across iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows in May 2026, adding a fourth crawl surface. Each platform applies its own citation logic, drawing from different sources and weighting different authority signals.
B2B Buyer Research Across Platforms and the Shortlisting Gap
B2B brands appear in a minority of relevant category AI queries regardless of their Google rankings. In UK professional services, only a small fraction of businesses appear in any AI recommendation. Both patterns assume a buyer queries one platform only. Buyers who cross-reference across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity compound the exposure gap with each additional search. A new model version can also replace a large share of the domains its predecessor cited. A business cited by one AI platform carries no assurance of appearing in the others.
The Buying Journey Completes Before Any Contact
Around 70% of the B2B purchasing journey completes before a buyer contacts any supplier, and most buyers select from a shortlist built at the start of their research (6sense, 2025). A UK business appearing in ChatGPT but absent from Gemini loses any buyer who opened their research there. The shortlist built on that platform closes without them. No follow-up email or outbound call recovers that position.
Single-Platform Tracking Hides the Visibility Gap
Only a minority of UK marketers track any form of AI visibility, and of those that do, most measure ChatGPT-specific citation rates. 62% of brands are invisible to AI despite investment in traditional SEO (Semrush, 2026). “We were only optimising for ChatGPT but now all our clients use Gemini too” describes businesses that measured one platform and concluded the problem was solved.
The Multi-Platform AI Visibility Strategy UK B2B Businesses Need Now
AI-referred visitors convert at materially higher rates than Google organic traffic, and businesses report sharp rises in conversions from AI recommendations. Both describe buyers who arrived having already decided. The three citation systems work differently: ChatGPT draws from Bing indexing and earned media, Google AI Overviews weight third-party citations alongside traditional SEO signals, and Perplexity prioritises content recency and structured data. Building AI search visibility in professional services UK now requires consistent entity presence and content structured for each model’s retrieval logic.
UK B2B businesses that limited AI visibility investment to a single platform in 2024 built an acquisition gap into their buyer pipeline. The buyers who would have found them found a competitor instead, on the platform they actually used. AI keeps recommending those competitors because they appear where the buyer searched.
