The stories, shifts and signals from this week in AI Search, and what they could mean for your business.
This Week in AI Search (w/c 09/03/26)
TL;DR
Courts drew the first legal boundary around agentic AI commerce this week. Amazon secured a court order blocking Perplexity's Comet shopping agent and ordering destruction of collected customer data. Google shipped Gemini 3 in AI Mode to all US users. OpenAI retired GPT-5.1 models and released GPT-5.3 Instant with richer web search. Perplexity pivoted to enterprise with a Personal Computer device and premium data APIs. Microsoft pushed oversized Copilot widgets at users searching for rival tools. The rules of AI search are now being written in courtrooms, not just product teams.
The courts have entered AI search. A judge ruled this week that AI agents cannot act without explicit authorisation, reshaping agentic commerce overnight. This matters now, not later.
What Happened
1. Amazon Wins Court Order Blocking Perplexity's Shopping Bot
A US District Court ruled that Perplexity AI must stop its Comet browser agent from making purchases on Amazon on behalf of users (Bloomberg, 2026). Judge Maxine Chesney found Perplexity accessed Amazon customer data without authorisation and ordered its destruction (CNBC, 2026). This is the first legal ruling to define boundaries for agentic AI commerce.
2. Google Expands Gemini 3 and Canvas Across AI Mode Search
Google rolled out Gemini 3 in Search's AI Mode to all US users, adding immersive visual layouts and dynamic simulations (TechCrunch, 2026a). Canvas in AI Mode now lets users draft documents and build custom tools directly inside Search (TechCrunch, 2026b). Gemini ships in Search on day one for the first time.
3. OpenAI Upgrades Web Search in GPT-5.3 Instant
OpenAI retired GPT-5.1 models on 11 March and shipped GPT-5.3 Instant with richer, more contextualised web search results (OpenAI, 2026). Three model versions in one month signals an accelerating pace.
4. Perplexity Launches Personal Computer and Enterprise APIs
Perplexity announced Personal Computer, a Mac Mini-based AI agent with local file access (Axios, 2026). Enterprise APIs and premium data from Statista, CB Insights, and PitchBook launched alongside it (Perplexity, 2026). Perplexity is no longer just a search tool.
5. Microsoft Bing Promotes Copilot Over Rival AI Tools
Bing displays an oversized Copilot widget when users search for ChatGPT or Gemini, appearing five times larger than standard results (Windows Latest, 2026). Platform interest now drives search results. Not user intent.
Why It Matters
AI search is no longer just a product race. It is a legal one. The Amazon-Perplexity ruling establishes that agentic AI operating without explicit platform authorisation faces court-ordered shutdown (Bloomberg, 2026). Every company building AI agents must now factor in legal risk.
The capability gaps are widening. Google ships Gemini on day one (TechCrunch, 2026a). OpenAI iterates through three model versions in a month (OpenAI, 2026). Perplexity pivots to enterprise computing (Axios, 2026).
User trust is the silent casualty. Microsoft's Copilot promotion treats users searching for rival tools as acquisition targets (Windows Latest, 2026). When results reflect platform interest over user intent, trust erodes.
Who Wins / Who Loses
Winners
- Amazon: Secured legal precedent protecting its marketplace from unauthorised AI agent access (Bloomberg, 2026).
- Google: Gemini 3 in AI Mode extends its lead as the dominant AI-native search platform (TechCrunch, 2026a).
- Enterprise buyers: Perplexity's new APIs and premium data integrations bring institutional-grade research to AI search (Perplexity, 2026).
- Compliant AI operators: Legal clarity around agentic commerce rewards those who built authorisation frameworks early.
Losers
- Perplexity: Court-ordered to halt its shopping agent and destroy collected Amazon customer data (CNBC, 2026).
- Independent publishers: Deeper AI integration across Google and OpenAI reduces clicks to original sources.
- Microsoft's credibility: Oversized Copilot widgets when users search for rivals damages Bing's neutrality (Windows Latest, 2026).
- AI search startups: Rapid model iteration from OpenAI and Google raises the barrier to entry each week.
The one thing to remember
The rules of AI search are being written in courtrooms, not just product teams. The Amazon-Perplexity ruling signals that agentic AI without authorisation is legally indefensible. Capability releases dominate headlines, but legal infrastructure defines what is possible at scale. If you deploy AI agents to search, shop, or act on behalf of users, build authorisation frameworks now.
