    1. Google Merges AI Overviews and AI Mode Globally

    Google confirmed on 20 May that AI Overviews and AI Mode now form one search experience, live worldwide across desktop and mobile (Google, 2026a). Gemini 3.5 Flash became the AI Mode default for all users globally, running 4x faster than previous frontier models on output tokens (Google, 2026b).     2. Search Agents and Redesigned Search Box Announced

    Google previewed personalised Search Agents running 24/7 in the background, monitoring topics without prompting (Google, 2026a). Information agents roll out to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers first in summer 2026.

    3. AI Mode Passes One Billion Monthly Users

    Google disclosed AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users, with query volume doubling each quarter (Google, 2026a).
