This Week in AI Search (w/c 30/03/26)
TL;DR
Perplexity faced a 135-page class action alleging it shared user prompts with Meta and Google via embedded trackers, including in Incognito sessions. OpenAI brought ChatGPT Voice to Apple CarPlay, and Google's March core update settled at a 9.5/10 volatility score: mass AI-content sites lost up to 71% of traffic while original data-led pages gained 22%. AI Overviews now trigger on 48% of searches, making citation the main competitive goal.
AI search entered your car and your courtroom this week. A landmark lawsuit targeted Perplexity's data practices, OpenAI pushed ChatGPT into millions of vehicles, and Google's core update settled with near-record volatility while AI Overviews now trigger on nearly half of all searches.
What Happened
1. Perplexity Hit With 135-Page Privacy Class-Action
A class-action filed 31 March in San Francisco federal court alleges Perplexity embedded Meta Pixel, Google Ads, and Meta's Conversions API in its code (State of Surveillance, 2026). These tools allegedly sent user prompts, IP addresses, and device data to Meta and Google for ad targeting, including during Incognito sessions (Digital Trends, 2026). It is the first major litigation targeting an AI search engine's data practices.
2. OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Voice on Apple CarPlay
On 2 April, OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Voice for CarPlay users on iOS 26.4 or newer (MacRumors, 2026). ChatGPT becomes the first generative AI assistant on CarPlay, enabling hands-free voice conversations from the dashboard (Engadget, 2026). The feature cannot access navigation or maps, but Android Auto users received nothing.
3. Google March Core Update Crushes AI Content
Google's March 2026 Core Update settled across all regions, reaching a SEMrush volatility score of 9.5 out of 10 (Search Engine Land, 2026). Sites producing mass AI content lost up to 71% of traffic. Original, data-led pages gained 22% visibility (Search Engine Journal, 2026). Topical authority and genuine expertise are the ranking signals that now matter.
4. Google AI Overviews Hit 48% of All Searches
BrightEdge data shows AI Overviews grew 58% year-on-year and now trigger on nearly half of all Google searches (ALM Corp, 2026a). The average overview exceeds 1,200 pixels, pushing organic position one below the fold on desktop. Click-through rates for position one fell by up to 61% on affected queries (Digital Applied, 2026).
Why It Matters
AI search is no longer a tool. It is the ecosystem. Google tightened its grip on the funnel this week. AI Overviews appearing in 48% of searches, combined with a core update penalising thin content, is a pincer movement (Search Engine Land, 2026). Original publishers gain. Everyone else loses ground (Digital Applied, 2026).
Perplexity's lawsuit signals something different. If the allegations hold, an AI search engine was sharing private conversations with the very ad platforms it claims to disrupt (State of Surveillance, 2026). Trust is the entry fee for AI search adoption. If you run a business that recommends AI search tools, this week added legal risk to every recommendation you make.
For UK businesses working on Generative Engine Optimisation, the update confirms what earned media and original content have always delivered: the signals AI systems trust most are independent, specific, and verifiable. Who Wins / Who Loses
Winners
OpenAI: CarPlay integration places ChatGPT in daily commutes, extending its reach beyond screens (Engadget, 2026).
Original publishers: Google's core update delivers a 22% visibility gain to expert, data-led content (Search Engine Journal, 2026).
Google: AI Overviews on 48% of searches cements its hold on the top of the funnel, even as click-through rates fall (ALM Corp, 2026a).
Losers
Perplexity: Allegations of sharing Incognito data with Meta and Google threaten a $20 billion business (Startup News, 2026b).
AI content sites: Mass-produced AI content faces a 71% traffic drop from Google's March update (Search Engine Land, 2026).
Traditional SEO publishers: AI Overviews on half of all searches cut position-one CTR by up to 61% (Digital Applied, 2026).
Android Auto users: OpenAI launched on CarPlay and left Android drivers entirely behind (Startup News, 2026a).
The One Thing to Remember
What you search in private may not stay private. Perplexity's lawsuit alleges AI search tools have been monetising conversations via the same ad networks they claim to disrupt. The AI search revolution promised to replace surveillance capitalism. This week, that promise faced its first serious legal test.
